The Only One Borneo
Sipadan Island is famous five degrees north of Ecuador in the Sea of Sulawesi (Celebes Sea). Lying 35 km south of Semporna on the mainland, like many tropical islands is forested and surrounded by sandy beaches. Sipadan is an oceanic island and was formed by living corals growing on top of an underwater volcano, which rises 600 meters from the seabed.
Geographic position of Sipadan puts in half the world's richest marine habitats, the heart of the Indo-Pacific region. Over 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this richest of ecosystems. Sipadan is famous for an extraordinary amount of green turtles and hawksbill, who will gather there to mate and nest and it is not uncommon for a diver to see more than 20 turtles every dive.
Another unique feature to divers visiting Sipadan is the turtle tomb, an underwater limestone cave labyrinth of tunnels and chambers that contain many skeletal remains of turtles that are disoriented and then drowned.
Residential barracudas and jacks big eyes, which often gather in thousands forming spectacular tornado-like formations is one of the strengths of each diver wish list. With the opportunity to see pelagic species such as manta rays, eagle rays, scalloped hammerhead sharks and whale sharks, each dive at Sipadan a highly anticipated event.
It's not just a big fish that amaze divers from Sipadan, the macro life is equally fascinating. Eels, leaf scorpion, mantis shrimps, fire gobies and various pipefish to ensure the different dive sites. The diversity and abundance of the sea at Sipadan gives it its reputation as one of the top ten dive sites in the world.
